March 1st, 2022 - The on-going conflict in Ukraine has lead to increased measures from the Canadian government to target money laundering on behalf of Russian elites with relationships to President Vladimir Putin. Transparency International Canada, along with our #endsnowwashing coalition partners Publish What You Pay Canada and Canadians for Tax Fairness, applaud these measures.
The conflict in the Ukraine and the flow of illicit Russian funds into Canada over the past few years highlights the importance of beneficial ownership transparency. The coalition has called for the establishment of a publicly-accessible national registry for several years, and believes the current conflict presents an important opportunity for Canada.
Today the End Snow-Washing coalition sent a letter urging action to Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Minister of National Revenue, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
