End Snow-Washing Coalition sends letter to Minister Freeland in support of the public beneficial ownership registry announcement

The End Snow-Washing Coalition sent a letter to the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, welcoming her announcement for a publicly accessible beneficial ownership registry in Budget 2021. The registry announcement marks a historic step for Canada to combat the proceeds of crime and paves the way for provinces and territories to harmonize beneficial ownership information in a pan-Canadian registry.

Moving forward, the Coalition suggests that the Canadian government discusses the beneficial ownership registry at the upcoming G7 Finance Ministers Meeting. Moreover, the letter highlights the importance of learning best practices and exchanging knowledge with peer countries that are implementing public registries.

The End Snow-Washing Coalition is composed of Transparency International Canada, Publish What You Pay Canada, and Canadians For Tax, three civil society organizations that have been working in advancing beneficial ownership transparency since 2016.
