The UN Convention Against Corruption, known as UNCAC, is not your typical international treaty: it’s a unique example of international law that links Canada’s role on the global stage with its efforts to address serious and pervasive challenges domestically. Since the UNCAC entered into force in 2005, corruption in Canada and globally has evolved rapidly in response to dramatic geopolitical, economic, and technological shifts, making for fascinating debates over how the treaty should be interpreted and adapted to a world far different than the one in which it was created. A conference of states who are party to the convention (Conference of States Parties, known as CoSP) is held biannually to negotiate resolutions that update the UNCAC’s state of play and implementation agenda. The CoSP is a crucial gathering that can have real effects in the fight against corruption globally and here at home in Canada.
Salvator Cusimano of Transparency International Canada and Cheyanne Scharbatke-Church of Besa Global participated in the recent UNCAC-CoSP held in Qatar in December 2025, and are holding a briefing that will cover:
an update on key issues that emerged during the negotiations, especially those most relevant to corruption and transparency in Canada;
the impact of adopted resolutions on the fight against corruption in Canada and globally;
key issues emerging for implementation, particularly pertaining to Canada;
ways for Canadian stakeholders to engage in the UNCAC process going forward, both domestically and globally.
We are thrilled that Angela Veitch, Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the International Organizations in Vienna and Yonatan Yakir of the Global Civil Society Coalition for the UNCAC will join the meeting to provide the perspective of Canada’s Head of Delegation and of global civil society, respectively.

La Convention des Nations Unies contre la corruption, connue sous le nom d'UNCAC, n'est pas un traité international typique : c'est un exemple unique de droit international qui relie le rôle du Canada sur la scène mondiale à ses efforts pour relever des défis graves et omniprésents sur le plan national. Depuis l'entrée en vigueur de la CNUCC en 2005, la corruption au Canada et dans le monde a évolué rapidement en réponse à des changements géopolitiques, économiques et technologiques dramatiques, suscitant des débats fascinants sur la manière dont le traité devrait être interprété et adapté à un monde bien différent de celui dans lequel il a été créé. Une conférence des États parties à la convention (Conférence des États parties, connue sous le nom de CoSP) est tenue tous les deux ans pour négocier des résolutions qui mettent à jour l'état des lieux et l'agenda de mise en œuvre de la CNUCC. La CoSP est une réunion cruciale qui peut avoir des effets réels dans la lutte contre la corruption à l'échelle mondiale et ici même au Canada.
