Position Description 

As Executive Director, you will bear overall responsibility for leading the work of TI-Canada, including in terms of representing the organisation publicly, delivering on its vision and strategic plan, managing its workforce, ensuring its financial stability and appropriate financial reporting, maintaining its networks and relationships, and overseeing the delivery of its projects and other work.

You will report directly to the Board of TI-Canada, through the Chair and President, as your line manager, on all matters including related to fundraising, finances and project implementation. You will also be responsible for liaising with TI Global Secretariat. In line with the budget, and under the supervision of the Board of TI-Canada, you may hire staff and contractors to implement projects and provide administrative support.

More specifically, you will perform the following functions.

Representation, Networking and Advocacy

  • Develop and articulate clear public policy positions on behalf of TI-Canada which bring added value to debates about anti-corruption in Canada and globally, in consultation with the Board and in broad alignment with TI-S.

  • Effectively communicate TI-Canada’s standards and positions both internally and externally through a variety of means of communication and through the media, including to create public awareness about anti-corruption issues.

  • Represent TI-Canada at public events, including by giving presentations.

  • Participate in relevant TI and other international meetings and networks, including to enhance the visibility of TI-Canada.

  • Identify current strategic advocacy opportunities for TI-Canada and engage in appropriate advocacy in relation to them.

  • Maintain/strengthen TI-Canada’s network with different sectors including government, business, media, academia and other CSOs, and interact in a constructive and as relevant critical manner with these stakeholder groups.

  • Maintain and enhance the coordination, cooperation and mutually beneficial relationships of TI-Canada with other TI National Chapters and TI-S, within the overall framework and strategy of the TI movement.

  • Undertake other relevant actions that promote the prestige, influence and effectiveness of TI-Canada, consistent with its mission, values and principles.

 Fundraising

Lead TI-Canada’s fundraising efforts so as to ensure its financial stability, including by:

  • Expanding our funding base by identifying potential funders and and supporters and preparing funding proposals.

  • Maintaining relations with existing, and identifying and building relationships with potential new donors and supporters, with the support of the Board.

 Project Management

  • Manage projects undertaken by TI-Canada, including any project staff or consultants, to ensure that project delivery is of high quality and that deadlines are met.

  • For TI-S facilitated projects, work closely with the relevant TI‐S project officer to ensure project delivery and that all reporting obligations are met.

  • Ensure that all requirements mandated by project funders are met in a professional, transparent and timely manner.

Communications

  • Ensure that the website remains updated and vibrant and that TI-Canada is active and has a strong audience on social media.

  • Draft and circulate press releases to disseminate our work and for advocacy purposes.

  • Regularly update members on TI-Canada’s activities and issues of key importance to it.

  • Work to expand TI-Canada’s membership.

Event Planning

  • Organise the Annual General Meeting.

  • Organise the Day of Dialogue on an annual basis.

  • Organise an in-person strategic planning event for members of the Board on an annual basis.

  • Organise other in-person and online events to profile TI-Canada’s work and foster debate about anti-corruption issues across Canada, including in French and in Quebec.

Governance and Administration

  • Ensure that TI-Canada complies with all of its legal requirements, including those based on our status as a charitable organisation.

  • Oversee the operations and staff of TI-Canada.

  • Prepare TI-Canada’s annual report.

  • Facilitate the review and update of TI-Canada governance documents as needed.

  • Ensure regular meetings with TI-Canada’s Chair and President.

  • Facilitate the holding of regularly scheduled meetings of the Board.

  • Keep the Board informed about TI-Canada’s activities and consult them as needed.

  • Perform such other tasks as may be assigned by the Board, in accordance with the goals and objectives of TI-Canada.

Financial

  • Manage the budget and financial operations of TI-Canada while ensuring transparency/accountability in all financial transactions.

  • Work with the auditor to ensure that the audit is conducted annually and that our finances meet better practice auditing standards.

  • Submit regular financial reports to the Treasurer, Chair and President and Board.

  • Otherwise ensure that TI-Canada complies with the requirements of the Canada Revenue Agency, including for charities, as well as with donor financial tracking and reporting requirements.


Person Specification

The successful candidate for this job will be a hardworking, motivated individual who has strong leadership qualities, who is interested in running a small but influential non-governmental organisation, and who is prepared to travel for work and to show some flexibility as to working hours.

Essential Qualifications

  •  A graduate degree in an area which is relevant to the work of TI-Canada.

  • At least five years’ relevant work experience, including some experience managing people and budgets.

  • Knowledge of anti-corruption generally, including as to key risk areas for Canada, and national and international mechanisms to address those risks.

  • Excellent written fluency in English, including the ability to prepare and communicate complex policy positions for a high-level audience and clear statements for general public consumption, and to edit the written work of others to those same standards.

  • Strong public speaking skills, including being comfortable addressing large audiences.

  • The ability to travel internationally.

  • Willingness to reside and work in the Montreal to Toronto corridor.

  • Strong research and analysis skills, including the ability to assess legal and policy proposals against best practice in the relevant area.

  • The ability to work effectively, including under pressure.

  • The ability to collaborate with people from a range of cultural, religious and social backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing projects for a non-profit organisation.

  • Experience in growing a small civil society organisation in Canada.

  • Knowledge of French.

  • Knowledge of or experience working with TI-Canada or other members of the TI network.

  • Work experience in the area of communications, including digital communications.

  • Some basic accounting skills.

  • Experience developing grant and funding proposals.

  • Experience establishing and maintaining relations with project funders and other types of donors.
